Newton famously isolated himself for two years to avoid the plague of 1665, and during that isolation he invented calculus. Thoreau famously wrote, “I never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude.”
Yet many people do their best work when they are surrounded by others, where they soak up the energy and collective vibe. For example, a recent study by Microsoft found that “Thriving employees talked about a collaborative environment and teamwork with colleagues.”
